1.1.4 Ultrasonic Scaler Transducers
(1) Types of Dental Ultrasonic Scaler Transducers
The heart of any dental ultrasonic scaler is its transducer.
Depending on the material and working principle, there are two types: magnetostrictive transducers and piezoelectric transducers.
Consequently, the scaler handpieces are also classified into two types based on the transducer type.
Magnetostrictive handpieces have a unified vibrating magnetic strip and scaler tip.

Piezoelectric transducer comprises four barium titanate piezoelectric crystals connected in parallel to form an "oscillating crystal body," wrapped with silver electrode sheets on both sides. The central round plate has a through-hole secured with a hollow bolt. This bolt connects to the water pipe on one end and fixes the scaling tip on the other. The transducer is permanently fixed inside the handpiece and cannot be removed.

The scaling tips of dental ultrasonic scalers are made of medical stainless steel or medical titanium alloy. To cater to different teeth and treatment areas, these scaling tips come in various shapes and can be replaced as needed.
